2018 Sonscreen Film Festival




The 2018 Sonscreen Film Festival will take place April 5-7 at the North American Division Headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. Sonscreen is an annual gathering for Christian filmmakers, artists, and all those who have a passion for film for the purpose of creating timely and relevant productions. Since its debut in 2002, the festival has become the destination for up-and-coming Christian filmmakers to share their creative work, gain exposure, network with media and film students, and be nurtured by film professionals.

Bill Mechanic | Opening Night, April 6 | 7:00 pm


Sonscreen Film Festival is excited to announce an exclusive conversation with Bill Mechanic, producer of "Hacksaw Ridge" and former chair and CEO of 20th Century Fox. Bill will his talk about his career as a filmmaker and discuss the 15-year journey to creating "Hacksaw Ridge."

Backstory: Through his company, Pandemonium Films, respected industry veteran and independent producer Bill Mechanic continues to produce high quality films with directors such as Paul Verhoeven and David Fincher. Bill most recently completed Hacksaw Ridge, with Mel Gibson directing and Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, and Teresa Palmer starring, based on a script by Randall Wallace, Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight. Hacksaw Ridge received two Oscar wins for Editing and Sound Mixing, and was nominated for six Oscars total, including Best Picture. 

Through Pandemonium, Bill also produced the Oscar-nominated Coraline (directed by Henry Sellick), The New World (directed by Terence Malick), and Dark Water (directed by Walter Salles). He co-produced the multi-Emmy nominated 82nd Academy Awards with Adam Shankman. In addition to Pandemonium, Bill serves on the Academy’s Board of Governors. 

Prior to Pandemonium, Bill was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment for seven years. In all, Fox earned 42 Oscar nominations and two Best Picture Oscars under Bill's tenure.


Debora Galloway | Friday, April 7 | 7:00 pm

Backstory: Debora Galloway has worked in the entertainment business for almost 30 years.  Most recently she held the position as Head of Grassroots Marketing on the Oscar Nominated Feature Film Hacksaw Ridge, which grossed more than $175 million worldwide. 

Debora also worked on the faith-based marketing team of The Passion of the Christ, the highest grossing faith-based film of all time, as well as the highest grossing R-Rated film of all time. Afterwards she was invited by Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions to become the Director of Merchandising and Licensing for The Passion of the Christ

She has spent the last 10 years serving in entertainment ministry, leading church-based small groups, and mentoring Christian women in the entertainment industry.


Kevin Ekvall | Friday, April 6 | 7:00 pm


Backstory: Kevin Ekvall is the Director of Come Before Winter. At this year's festival, he will discuss this new docudrama about the last days of Dietrich Bonhoeffer through the eyes of the British ''Black Propaganda'' radio broadcast team. 

Kevin, the director of the 2014 documentary I'm Not Leaving, is a graduate of Southern Adventist University. As a student, Kevin won several Sonscreen Awards.


Terry Benedict | Friday, April 7 | 10:00 Am


Backstory: Terry Benedict, a producer of Hacksaw Ridge, was the producer and director of The Conscientious Objector, a documentary on the life of Desmond T. Doss. Terry grew up expecting to be an archaeologist discovering the Holy Grail. Instead he found himself in Hollywood supervising chase scenes in The Terminator and Marked For Death. After 15 years in the business, Terry's life took an unexpected turn, causing him to evaluate the art that he was producing. Impressed to create films that inspire and promote positive messages to the global community, he produced and directed the critically-acclaimed and award-winning documentary film, The Conscientious Objector

Terry is currently shooting two documentaries about poverty and social justice issues.
